These reports were prepared for the Bushmeat Crisis Task Force by University of Maryland graduate students enrolled in Problem Solving in Conservation and Development, during the Fall 2002 semester. Four groups of students produced seven documents in the areas of Private Industry Linkages, Public Awareness, and Sustainability & Alternatives, available below. A fifth group in the class conducted an external review.

Report [56 pages - 602 kb]About these reports
These documents were prepared for the Bushmeat Crisis Task Force by University of Maryland graduate students enrolled in Problem Solving in Conservation and Development, during the Fall 2002 semester. This capstone course is designed to give students the opportunity to consult to local non-government organizations and government agencies in the D.C. metro area in order to help solve conservation and/or development problems. The Problem Solving Team addresses each issue by combining professional interviews of clients, experts, and stakeholders with extensive literature reviews, in order to define the problems and identify practical solutions. The end result of this process is a written document and formal oral presentation delivered to the client.
The Problem Solving Team worked in groups to address five issues identified by the Bushmeat Crisis Task Force (BCTF) as leading problems facing professionals working on the African bushmeat crisis. These projects include an external review of the BCTF, identification of key decision makers in the U.S. and Africa, organization of a public awareness campaign for the U.S. and Africa, examination of the potential for sustainable hunting in Africa, and identification and analysis of alternatives to the bushmeat trade.

The Bushmeat Crisis Task Force (BCTF) is operated in conjunction with, and supported by, its task force members. BCTF is currently a project of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and at the time these reports was created was a project of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization exempt from federal income tax under the Internal Revenue Code.
BCTF identified the topic of each Problem Solver report as a priority for wildlife conservation in Africa, and assisted in developing research, provided resources and networking, and guided the students throughout the process.
