UMD Student Presentations at Bushmeat Crisis Solutions Symposium

Jun 19, 2009

On January 31, 2003, students from the University of Maryland Sustainable Development and Conservation Biology (CONS) program presented the results of research they conducted on behalf of BCTF. The quality of the research and presentations was excellent, and results and analysis are already helping shape BCTF priorities. After an overview of BCTF’s mission and recent activities by Heather Eves and Natalie Bailey, students presented the following reports:

  • Adapting Communication to a Dynamic Cultural Landscape: Recommendations for the Development and Implementation of a Bushmeat Crisis Public Awareness Campaign in Central Africa
  • Recommendations for the Evolution and Implementation of the Bushmeat Promise as a Centerpiece of a Bushmeat Crisis Task Force Public Awareness Campaign
  • Sustainable Use of Wildlife: The Search for Common Ground
  • Playing in Counterpoint: Bushmeat Users and the Possibility of Alternatives
  • The role of key decision makers in addressing the bushmeat issue: a Review of the World Bank CEO Tropical Africa Working Group and Addressing Bushmeat with Forest Management

This collaboration was so successful that BCTF and Professor Jim Dietz have submitted a proposal to explain the process at the next Society for Conservation Biology meeting in Minnesota. Full reports for all six presentations are available in the Key Documents section of the BCTF website.
