EFE July 17, 2001 Brasilia, Jul 17, 2001 (EFE via COMTEX) -- International trafficking of wild animals, the world's third-largest illegal business - after drugs and weapons - may spread a number of exotic diseases, a Brazilian non-governmental organization warned. "Leprosy, venereal disease and other illnesses may be spread throughout the planet if nations fail to adopt policies to combat the international animal trade," Dener Giovanini, coordinator of the National Network against Wild Animal Traffic (RENCTAS), said. Giovanini spoke at the opening of the first South American Conference on Illegal Trade in Wildlife being held July 17-20 in Brasilia, where the threat the wildlife trade poses to human health and the environment will be discussed....
